Summary of The Venger – 1 :

. William Somerset Maugham, better known as W . Somerset Maugham is one of the best-known British novelists, playwrights, and short story writers.

.  In 1897 his first novel was published. and Entitled Liza of Lambeth, it described a tale of working-class adultery and its consequences.

. In 1915 literally, Masterpiece of human bondage was published. Critics consider it a semi-autobiography novel. 

.  Despite homosexuality being frowned upon during his time , Maugham remained an extremely successful novelist and playwright throughout his career.

. Today’s reputation rest on works such as Lisa of Lambeth’s (1897) Moon and the Sixpence 1916 the razor s Edge (1944), and Cakes and Ale but his most critically venerated work remains of human Bondage.

. W. Somerset Maugham’s The Verger describes the story of how even an illiterate man can become successful in life.

. In the story, Albert Edward Foreman has been a verger of St. Peter’s Church in Neville Square for over sixteen years.

. After Church services finish one day the new vicar asks the foreman to join him in the Vestry. The new vicar tells the foreman that to continue to be a virgin in the church, he would need to read and write. After Foreman flatly refuses to learn, the vicar fires him from his job.

. On his way back from the church, Foreman suddenly has a business idea. He realizes that in the street that he is walking on there are no shops that sell tobacco. He decides to invest his savings to open a tobacco shop in the street.

. A certain amount of time has passed we find that foremen’s business has grown from one shop to multiple shops. He has become a successful businessman.
