PARONYMS AND HOMONYMS 
DEFINITION,  DIFFERENCES, EXAMPLES, 
 SENTENCES IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR



1. PARONYMS

Definition : 

In English we find several words which are derived from the same root word. These words differ slightly in form, but in many cases the meaning differ a lot. Such words are also called Paronyms.

Example –   Alternate (by turn ) Alternative (choice between two things), 
Act ( to do ) Action (doing things)



2. HOMONYMS HOMOPHONES
Definition: 

In English Word similar in sound or pronunciation, but different in meaning, are called Homonyms. 

Example –   Access, Excess, Affect, Effect

PARONYMS EXAMPLES WITH SENTENCES 

(a) Affecting (Touching, pathetic)
Affectation (Antonym of natural)

The web series has many affecting scenes and situations.

Political leaders speak with affectation and artfulness.

(b) Besides (In addition)
Beside (By the side)

Besides paying my debt he also gave me money for the medicines.

In Teachers day function none was sitting beside class teacher.

(c) Confident (Certain)
Confidant (End) 

I am confident that he will come.

He is a cheat, don.t make him your confident. 


(d) Divers (who swim under the water)
Diverse (Dissimilar – different )

Divers are trying to reach the top.

Diverse opinions were given by the members on this proposal.

(e) Egotist ( self conceited )
Egoist (Selfishness, self interested )

I don’t talk with an egotistic guy.

She is an egoistic.

(f) Funeral (ceremony after death)
Funereal ( Gloomy )

More than 500 persons attended the funeral of her mother.

She came to office with a funeral countenance.

(g) Graceful (handsome – smart)
Gracious (kind)

She has a graceful appearance.

God is gracious.

(h) Honorary (without any remuneration)
Honorable (Deserve honor, respected)

He was nominated ‘Honorary’ Chairman of the society.

I request the honorable principal to come on the dais.

(t) Temporal (Antonym to spiritual)
Temporary (A short time)

Now – a days people are ready to do anything for temporal gains.

I offered her a temporary job.

(a) Ad (short form of advertisement)
Add (short for addition)

He has given an add in the newspaper.

Add three or four.

(b) Aerie (eagle’s nest) 
Airy (breezy)

There is an aerie on this tree.

The house is quite airy 

(c) Ate (past tense of eat )
Eight (the number base of octal, seven, eight, nine)

He ate three Banana.

I have eight black shirt.

(d) Bare (uncovered)
Bear (to tolerate)
Bear (an animal)
Beer (a kind of wine )

She came here bare footed

I cannot bear you insulting remarks.

There are three bears in this circus.

I prefer beer over soft drinks.


(e) By (assistance)
Buy (purchase)

A snake was killed by Ram with a stick.

I want to buy cycle.

(f) Assent (agreement) 
Ascent (going up)

He gave his assent to the new proposal.

He pushed the button and the elevator began its slow ascent.

(g) Bra (brassiere)
Braw (well – grommed)

She wears beautiful colored bra.

He always keep himself in braw shape.
