              Debate Writing

1. The government has banned the use of animals in the laboratories for the purpose of dissection. Write a debate in 150-200 words either for or against this decision.

Ans. Banning the use of animals for the purpose of dissection in school labs by the government is a move in the right direction.
Animal dissection labs are an unethical and unnecessary part of school biology curriculum. The millions of animals that are dissected each year in education systems ar subjects of service animal abuse. Many of these animals are sold to schools from fur companies, pet stores and many times slaughter houses. Animals are often stock- piled on top of one another and shipped in crowded container with no temperature regulation, food or water. By continuing with animal dissection ,school board are promoting the abuse and mistreatment of the animals.
There are many other ways that students can be taught about the anatomy of an animal that does not involve taking innocent lives. It is downright cruel and not needed. Nor is it very pleasant for them. The knowledge that dissection can bring may be valuable in some job position, but it also teaches how to hurt and kill innocent animals
Buying animals for all biology classes can be quite expensive. There are so many educational,  interactive dissection programmes that can be used instead, such as Digital Frog 2. 5,  V – Frog TM, Dissection works etc. The money spent on buying dissection sets can clearly be put to Better
 use.
May be we could watch videos or look at diagrams of the insides but we don’t have to go around killing animals. With animal species already becoming less and less why should we be killing more when we can easily learn about them in many other ways?

2. The odd – even experiment in Delhi was criticised but keeping in mind the pollution, traffic snarls and road bursting with vehicles it is the need of the hour. Write a debate in 150-200 words either for or against the motion. You are Amit/ Amita.

Ans.  Respected judges, dear friends and my worthy opponent,
Today’s topic of discussion is ‘ Odd – even formula in Delhi – need of the hour. I, Amita would like to express my views for the motion. Friends, the odd – even 15 days experiment in Delhi drew a lot of flak from the pessimists but one cannot deny that congestion on Delhi roads reduced significantly. The travelling time came down by almost 25% thought pollution levels did not come down as expected. Nevertheless, those 15 days were an eye opener. I agree that it did cause inconvenience to many people due to lack of sufficient public transport but we must admit that it forced all us to think of using alternate modes of transport for commuting. Carpooling became the order of the day and it also helped save fuel which is a non – renewable resource. I do believe that 15 days was too short a period to try it out. Convenience is a habit and it takes time for us to adopt to a situation alien to us or which forces us to come out of our comfort zone. The census done by newspapers, media all point towards the acceptance of the odd – even formula. Not that there was no resistance but acceptance was encouraging. Had it been given more time pollution levels too would have gone down. In the end I would like to say that we need to appreciate steps taken for the larger good which should be appreciated and supported wholeheartedly.

Thanks

3. Celebrating Valentine’s Day is a threat to our Indian culture. Do you agree? Write a debate in about 150-200 words either for or against the motion.

Ans. Respected judges and my worthy opponents,
I do not agree that celebrating Valentine’s Day is a threat to Indian culture. We are living in a global village which is longer divided by narrow boundary walls and we need to accept this. There are views for for and against celebrating Valentine’s Day. Some believe it is a threat to our Indian culture because it is an open expression of physical attraction between opposite sex corrupting the minds of young teenagers. On the other hand, the teenagers are in no way ready to be bound by old values and traditions. They believe they have right to make a decision as to what to do and what not to do which should be entirely theirs. We need to know that our youth is exposed to media which mirrors the world. Culture evolves and it has evolved with the passage of time in India also. Gone are the days of sati Pratha and child marriage. Have our traditions not changed? Well, it is high time to change our outdated views and accept the Global culture rather than opposing it for anything resistant to change stagnates. To conclude, I do realize the importance of protecting our culture from western influences but am against conservative, rigid outdated views.

4. It has been debated for quite some time now as to whether increase in school days is required or not to improve the standard of the students. Write a debate in about 150-200 words either for or against the motion.

Ans. Respected judges and my worthy oppeonents
A growing number of educationists in India are of the opinion that the school day and school year should increase in order to keep students on the campus for a longer period. Their argument is based on the fact that children coming from low income group need more time and other students need time to purpose more activities which they feel is necessary for their overall development. Moreover, big metropolises, with both parents working, the children require a safe environment which they can get in schools. Their logic appears sound to some extent but is it fair for the kids ? No doubt children do adapt to change because they do not have much of a say in the decisions taken by adults for them. But, what about self study , a good lunch, a good rest?
Are we trying to churn out computer?
I feel we need to understand that 8 hours in school is more than enough for kids. As far as safety and security of the kids is concerned it is for the parents to find a solution to that problem. Schools  cannot take over the responsibility of parents. Lengthy school hours will not improve the performance of a child – a tried mind can neither concentrate nor focus properly. The same is applicable to a tried body. Adding more time to school would result in burnout and an  aversion for attending school. Thus to conclude it is definitely not a good idea to increase school hours or the school year.

5.  Write a debate in about 150-200 words on the topic ‘ Are we happier than our ancestors ‘ ? You can write for or against the motion.

Ans. Respected judges and dear friends,
We are an outcome of our past , forged by it and thus our present shape and appearance has more to do with what our ancestors have given us. But one question yet remains to be answered, ” Are we happier than them?” My stance would be negeaive!
When we compare the the ancient times with the modern times, we do see that we have made a lot of progress. What we have today in terms of material possessions, our ancestors could have not even dreamt of. They lived in pre electrification days, they did not have automation, there were hardly any medical facilities. There were no computers, no telephones, no tractors for agriculture etc. Everything was done manually as they probably had plenty of man power to help them around. We are definitely happier due to material possessions and advancement our modern age has made. It takes only minutes to accomplish our work because of electricity. By using automobiles, trains and airplanes, we can travel faster. Various kinds of mechanised tools and machines have increased productivity in agriculture. We can contact people living in any part of the world.
In a highly materialistic society we are always looking for more and more acquisitions.
Greed, jealousy, discontent, ambition etc, have made our existence hollow and at no time can we call ourselves completely happy. Our ancestors were backward and did not know about such modern gadgets but they were content, happy and less paranoid about acquisitions. I , thus, conclude that we are today more equipped than our ancestors but not as happy as they were.

Thanks
