             Section A= Reading       (30 Marks)

Read the passage given bellow carefully:

                                                            (12 marks)

1).man has always used energy that has come, one way or the other from the sun but today man has discovered a new source of energy which does not come from the sun. It comes from inside the atom. This is called atomic energy.

2). Everyone and everything is made of atom. Now what is an atom. Suppose you go on cutting a piece of copper into very small pieces. At last you will get so small pieces of copper that can not be further divided would be atoms of copper. These atoms are very small. For example, a million atoms would fit into the full stop at the end of this sentence.

3). There are only ninety atoms of which the whole of our ordinary world is made of. These atoms join together in different ways to form different substances.

4). Most atoms do not change. For example, the atom is the piece of copper are the same today as they were thousands of millions of years ago. But a few kind of atoms are always changing. One of these atoms will suddenly throw out a small piece from its center called nucleus. As a result, it becomes a different kind of atoms, a little smaller than before. Atoms which naturally behave in this way are called radioactive. This change into smaller atom is called decay.

5). The atoms of uranium, which is a metal are radioactive. Its atoms change by throwing out particles from its nucleus of the atoms. Several kinds of uranium atoms are such that one of them can easily be made to split into two atoms of about the same size. This splitting is called fission and it gives a lot of energy. If many of these uranium atoms split at the same time, we get a lot of energy.

6). In order to split a uranium atoms, it must be hit by a neutron. Neutrons are very small nuclear particles that are active and are always moving in the air. If there is a lot of uranium in one piece, the first splitting atoms make other atoms split . This is called chain reaction. It happens because the splitting atoms throws out two or three  more neutrons make other atoms split.

7). The chain reaction spreads out like a rapidly burning forest fire. It gives rise to a vast amount of energy. If this chain reaction is allowed to go on at its natural speed, the result is explosion. This is how the atom bomb works. But we slow down the chain reaction, we get a great deal of energy heat at a controlled rate and we can use it.

8). When we burn something, hear comes , from the changes in the ways its atoms are join to other atoms but the atoms themselves remain the same. In fission the splitting atoms give energy millions of times greater and the atoms themselves change. An orange size piece of uranium will explode with as much force as 20000 ton of ordinary high explosive and lay waste the entire city. If used for peaceful purpose a piece of uranium can give as much energy as 47000 times its weight of coal.

9). Uranium is found in the Earth as an ore. This ore are taken out and chemically treated to get the pure mental. India has uranium mines at Jaduguda in Bihar . In Africa , there is a great deal of uranium ore in Kenya , Uganda , Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Cango.

On the basis of your understanding of this passage answer the following questions with the help of given options:

Doctor and nutritionist say the secret to lasting good health is not a quick weight -loss plan , fad-diet, or gorging on ‘super-foods’ but building Good Eating Habits . This means consistently watching what you eat ––– planning each meal and its timing following simple, golden rules.

A balanced meals sounds simple but most times we slip up eating more of one food over the other because it’s our favourite or easier to source and / or cook. Result: nutritional imbalances. Ensure your meal incorporates the five food groups: cereals and grains; pulses and legumes; fruits and vegetables; milk and meat products; nuts and oilseeds/oil.

Drink two litres  of water daily to maintain the body’s water -, balance, flush out toxins , prevent dehydration and build-up of kidney stones, etc

Go organic . Avoid foods bred on artificial pesticides  and fertilizers. Organic products are difficult to source, but make that effort. Or grow a kitchen garden.
Limited portion even of health foods. Olive oil is healthy but an olive-oil drenched vegetable isn’t.

Vitamin tables are beneficial but overdosing certain varieties is counterproductive, causing health problems. Salad is great but not one smothered with sauce . Eat plenty of greens . They provide iron, fibre , calcium and prevent indigestion, constipation.
You can’t do away with oil, ghee and butter, some of it’s actually healthy. Only, minimise their use. Steaming, boiling, roasting and poaching are healthy alternatives to deep-frying , shallow-frying ,in lots of oil/ghee.

Avoid recycled oil or ghee . It’s rich in cancer-causing carcinogens. Sadly, many Indian homes, restaurants and street-food vendors repeatedly recycle cooking oil/ghee.
Go natural . Fresh fruits and vegetables (including garlic, onion) are weapons against cancer, digestive ailments, heart disease. And wherever possible, eat them with their fibre-rich peels on. Fruits and veggies prevent clotting tendency and protect arterial walls.
The high-flying professional traveling 20 days a month often complains of lack of control over diet. Actually, she /he’s not that helpless. For example, from bread- baskets in planes choose multigrain or brown bread. At restaurants, order salad and fruits with each meal. Check menus for low-calorie options/ health foods.
Adhere to regular meal-timings. Else, your body is thrown off- balance attempting to compensate. Also, eat good breakfast, followed by a moderate lunch and light dinner , advises Dr polasa , “High-fatty meals are particularly to be avoided at dinner as there is little physical activity after consumption, so usused excessive calories are converted into fat stored in the body .”

Finally when it comes to the overall good-health menu, eating right is a major but not the only item. For best results, include: exercise; regular check-ups; no smoking; a package of positive thinking; yoga and meditation.
