Introduction of On The Face Of It
People who suffer from disabilities must always look at the bright side of things and adapt their life to the changing realities. They should never lose hope but be optimistic and face the the reality of life bravely . At the same time the actual pain or in convenience caused by a physical impairment is often much Less than sense of alienation felt by the person with disabilities. The disabled people need support and acceptance and not our pity. The title ‘ On The Face’ of it is used to mean that something seems to be good true etc. But that opinion needs to be changed when you know more about it.
Summary with explanation of on the face of it
Summary on the face of it :
There are two characters in the Play an old man named Mr lamb and a small boy of 14 years called derry. Both suffer from physical impairment. The old man had lost his one leg in a bomb explosion during war. the boy got his face burnt from one side as a bottle of acid fell on him. One day derry gets inside Mr lambs garden. They start talking to each other. It turns out to be, a long mean full conversation ,an exchange of two completely outside views.
Mr lamb tries to comfort Derry and tells him not to fear anything. He says that the gate remains always open and nobody can enter the garden. Derry says definitely that he is not afraid rather people are afraid of him. They looked at his burnt face and shrink back. They are either ignore him or just pity him. Some make fun of him and others make uncharitable remarks about him. They call him as ugly as a devil lamb tries to console him. It tells Derry that he does not get annoyed when children call him lamey lamb . After all there is nothing wrong with it . if he does not have 1 leg, then lamey lamb fits him. He ask Derry to face the Harsh realities of life bravely instead of withdrawing himself into a shell.
Derry does not seem to be convinced by Mr lamb observations on life. Lamp tries to make him understand that it is the inner beauty of a person that matters not the outer beauty. Derry does not agree. He says that it is important to be handsome from outside also. He when his mother kisses him on the other side of his face. When his mother avoids his ugly face than what about others? He regrets that he has to spend whole of his life with his half face. Mr lamb encourages him saying that he has got a full body. He can do anything like other people or maybe he can do better than others.
Mr lamb encourages Derry to look at the world around him and he will find so many interesting things to attract him. He can do so many good things to keep himself occupied. Lamb gives his own example. He does not feel lonely when he looks at the buzzing bees and flowers in the garden and listens to the sounds of birds and insects. He enjoys sitting in the sun and he grows, fruits ,weeds and flowers. Derry finds a lot of truth , sense and inspiration in Mr lambs words. He says that he also wants a big house with a big lawn. Lamb asks him to stay with him. However, Derry wants to go back home as he knows his mother will be waiting. Before leaving, he promises Mr lamb to return to him.
At home , Derry tells his mother about his meeting with Mr lamb and his intention to go back to meet him. She strictly warns him against going to Mr lamb as she has heard many things about the old man. But Derry is determined to return to Mr lamb who has given him a new meaning of life. He rushes out of the house. In the meanwhile Mr lamp climbs on the ladder to get the crab apples from the trees but he falls down. Derry enters the garden painting and saying, “you see, you see! I came back. “Suddenly he finds Mr lamb lying on the ground. He kneels and ask Mr lamb to get back but Mr lamb is unmoved. Derry comes to know that he has lost his only friend in this world. Never the less, he knows now how to face the world with his disfigured face.

Ans. Mr lamb is an old man who lives in a big house, having a huge garden. He lost his one leg in a bomb explosion in the war. Deery gets into the garden by climbing the garden wall stealthily.

Ans. Derry finds himself drawn towards Mr lamb in spite of himself because Mr lamb was not afraid of his disfigured face. Mr lamp was willing to talk to him and he wanted his company. Mr lamb too was a handicapped person and expected people to understand him and give him company; but he received none. In Derry , if found understanding and friendship. Derry Too found it was necessary that he should get someone to talk to him. Hence, he found himself drawn towards Mr lamb.

Ans. In the second part of the play Mr lamb discloses to Derry that he sits all day alone in the sun. He reads books a lot. His house is empty but inside there are are plenty of books. His house doesn’t have any curtains at the windows. He like the light and the darkness. Enjoys the rain falling on the rooftop.
Q.5. the actual pain or inconvenience caused by a physical impairment is often much less than the sense of alienation felt by the person with disabilities. What is the the kind of the behaviour that the person excepts from others?
Ans. A Disabled person does not expect us to sympathise with him /her . It will make them feel more terrible. They want us to accept them as they are. They expect us to understand them and help them. They hate being started at it and alienated by the society.
Q.6. will Derry get back to his old seclusion or or will Mr lambs brief association effect a change in the kind of life he will lead in the future?
Ans. It is most unlikely that derry will get back to his old seclusion and indulge in self-pity. He received a lot of positive energy from Mr lamb who encouraged him to live his life. He had told that it he got two arms two legs and eyes and ears and he has got a tongue and a brain. He would be able to get on well like all the rest in life. He could even do better than others.

In the Play derry just himself from what the world thought about him. everyone thought his face was terrible but lamb made him reconsider his opinion about himself. This enable him to have faith in himself . he taught him from his own life. Mr lamp is a handicapped person. One of his legs was blown off in an explosion. But he looks at the bright side of things and learnt to live with it. He spends his time reading books listening to the humming of the bees etc. He could even climb trees with his tin leg. During his conversation with derry he puts positive energy with in him and helps him change his world views totally. Until now derry lived a depressed life but his interaction with Mr lamb changes his complete perspective about the world on his life. Not even his parents could help him in this way .No one not even his mother could stop derry going to lamb because he knew that he was his last chance.

Slowly , derry started finding a lot of truth sense and inspiration in Mr lambs words. Besides derry appeared quite impressed by the way Mr lamb had handled his own handicap and loneliness. Finally some kind of relationship got entablished between the two. Derry suddenly found a friend in Mr lamb. Mr lamb’ s meeting with derry became a turning point in his life.
