LISTENING SCRIPT ENGLISH CONVERSATION &  DIALOGUES

TRANSCRIPT

Boy  :   Hi, Riya

Girl  :  Oh, hi, Kartik. Hey, did you see the notice board yesterday?

Boy  :  No. I’ve skipped it as usual like most of the students, haha. tell me, was there something special on it.

Girl   :  Yeah there was a notice from our NSS in-charge, Mr Sharma. It was about one-day camp meant for NSS Volunteers. It’s going to be organized for next Sunday.

Boy  :  Is it meant for volunteers from class, class 11th. or 12th? What are they supposed to do?

Girl  :  It’s meant only for our class, class 12th. Well, you know how dirty our area has got! So here is an opportunity to make it more beautiful. It’ll be a great social service.

Boy  :  So you will be cleaning all the streets and roads?

Girl  :  You are right. We’ll be cleaning the main streets by picking up all plastic wrappers, bags, etc. You know all the gutters get chocked due to plastic as it is not biodegradable. We are also going to make colony walls look nicer and create murals on empty walls depicting social messages. Many people have offered the walls of their houses for murals.

Boy  :  Oh really! Perhaps we have come across some ‘murals’ in our English book in the chapter about it. A mural is to make a painting on the wall itself, isn’t it?

Girl  :  Exactly!

Boy  :  But even if you clean the area, people will just litter it again the next day. So what is the use of cleaning it? We’re just students-it’s not our business. We need to focus on our students. it is the duty of older people to think about all this.

Girl  :  No,  Kartik, that isn’t so. We are living on an ailing planet and we have entered into an era of responsibility. It is a pity that we all keep shifting that responsibility to others. Honestly, it’s ridiculous – I think you  are just making excuses because you’re refusing to leave your comfort zone ! but if we all did our bit, it would be very effective and have such a positive impact, wouldn’t it ? We can change the whole scenario.

Boy  :  OK! That makes sense, I am convinced. But how can you make others aware?

Girl  :  We are preparing posters with slogans to make people aware.  We’ll talk to them about the importance of cleanliness for the health and hygiene of all of society. We’ll also highlight the hazards of plastic, which is the main source of liter on the earth. If we want to save this planet, we’ll have to say ‘NO’ to plastic. We need more and more hands to enlighten people.

Boy  :  You’re absolutely right. It’ll be an honor to be a part of this camp. Tomorrow I’ll see Mr Sharma and put my name down to attend the camp.

Girl  :  Good! See him in the staff room as he is going to leave early to make the necessary arrangements for the camp.

Boy  :  Oh yeah. Good idea. Thanks for letting me know all of this.

Event Manager 1  :   The entertainment industry has shown a spurt of growth outside of Bollywood. One of the new areas of growth is in the state of Gujarat where the urban population is very focused on new media entertainment.

Event Manager 2  :  Have you some figures available about the growth rate?

Event Manager 1  :  According to the statistics released by  government sources, the growth has been over 15% of the country growth.

Event Manager 2  :  Which is is the most popular form of entertainment here ?

Event Manager 1  :  Like all the other states of the country, It is the Hindu film industry that has realised like potential of the Gujarat. Film directors are scouting for suitable locations for shots for their new releases. Only recently a best seller was converted into a movie and shot in Ahmedabad.

Event Manager  2  :  Is it palaces or outdoor scenery that is popular for shoots

Event Manager 1 :  The most talked-about shooting episode was that of a popular comedy film which was shot in a royal place in Vadodara.

Event Manager 2  :  What about outdoor shots?

Event Manager 1  :  That too, is very popular. Gujarat is now popular with film directors for its vast diversity of locals ranging from deserts, salt plains, to see coasts to jungles. The diverse heritage structures in the state have also become a great choice for photographers and filmmakers, from abroad.

Event Manager  2  :  Have foreign filmmaker also been lured to shoot in Gujarat?

Event Manager 1  :  That is the latest initiative of the government. At the Cannes Film Festival, the tourism department of the state set up a stall to lure foreign filmmakers to come to Gujarat for shooting their films.

Event Manager 2  :  An important component of films are songs and background music. Is there any headway being made in this direction as well?

Event Manager 1  :  The state has a vast variety of folk music which are now being represented on the national scene. Urban areas of the state have been experimenting with western inputs such as reggae, po, rap, rock and mental, as also a bit of classical fare, Even ghazals have entered the  fray. There are several popular ghazal singers now.

Event Manager 2  :  Is there any growth in entertainment outside of the Bollywood circle?

Event Manager  1  :  One important growth has been in karaoke machines. This is a kind of video game for amateur singers and is a combination of the Japanese word ‘Kara’ or empty and ‘okesutorsa’ or orchasetra. The music in the pop song played is minus the lead vocal input. This gap is filled in with Hindi film songs and thus karoke is fast growing bot just in the state, but pan-India.

Event Manager 2  :  What about the instruments ?

Event Manager 1  :  The music is recorded in digital format and the sound of the instruments is kept intact. Thus, one can programme and record one’s favorite song on the machine.

Event Manager 2  : One can satisfy one’s pleasure of solo singing and rejuvenate both mind and soil.

Event Manager 1  :  That’s the whole idea.

Speaker 1 :  As the Fukushima nuclear disaster still weighs heavily on Japanese public memory, the country has shut down its last operating nuclear reactor with no timetable for a

restart. The accident, the result of an earthquake and a tsunami, was the largest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986. However it needs to be borne in mind that the disaster was compounded by safety failures. Has adequate measures been taken, meltdown of the Fukushima plant could have been avoided. Hence to demonise nuclear energy is incorrect.

Speaker 2  :  There is no denying that nuclear energy needs to be part of the energy mix. While the cost of setting up nuclear plants is high, the production cost of nuclear electrifying power over the long term, is far lower than traditional sources. In a resource-poor country such as Japan, energy costs have risen by as much as 20% of the total electricity produced comes from nuclear plants,

Speaker 3  :  While safety is always a watch word when it comes to nuclear power, in the case of thermal power plants, danger is posed as well. In addition to nasty emissions such as soot, the latter also produce a continuous stream of radioactive effluents. In contrast, nuclear power plants have zero emissions. As for renewable sources of energy, like the wind and sun, they are expensive and only produce top-up rather than base power. With adequate safety measures, nuclear power can galvanise the economy of India.

Speaker 4  :  On the other hand, it has been found that before the calamitous tsunami and earthquake of 2011 forced a shutdown of Fukushima, Japan was getting 30 % of its electricity from 54 nuclear reactors. Since then, all but two have been shut down for stress tests. Yet all those fearing that the shutdown will now send Japan spinning into blackouts, power rationing and economic meltdown have realized that none of these nightmares have come to pass in Japan, after March 2011.

Speaker 5   :  Afters the Fukushima shutdown, there have been great improvements in the efficiency of thermal power plants. Industry has also pursued efficiency gains. The use of energy-efficient construction materials and lighting has risen. Japan has increased its energy renewable generations capacity by 15% Through some critics argue that renewable energy appears more expensive than nuclear energy. It is only if you concreate on upfront costs. But if one factors in the rising costs of disposing radioactive waste, the economics of renewable energy is much safer.
